Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy could increase adverse pregnancy outcomes and impact negatively the growth and health of children throughout their lives. It is recommended that action on strategies to decrease air pollution and increase education are taken by national and international authorities, as well as health care providers.
This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of air pollution on human health and pregnancy outcomes. A causal relationship was found between particulate air pollution and respiratory deaths in the post-neonatal period. High levels of air pollution were found to be associated with DNA damage in newborns, an increase in mortality and morbidity in childhood, and an increased risk for hypertension, coronary heart diseases, and non-insulin dependent diabetes in adulthood.
