What is this? The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated measures have placed a stain on global supply chains. In this systematic review, the authors searched for articles about chain supply resilience to investigate resilience modelling and quantification, connecting the supply chain to other networks including transportation and command and control. They restricted their searches to articles published in English and did the search in January 2020 to update an earlier review. They included 141 articles, which were published in 2007 to 2016 (47 articles) or 2017 to 2019 (94).

What was found: Specific disruption scenarios have been used to test supply chain resilience models and differentiate between operational risks and non-operational risks, such as disasters due to natural hazards, terrorism, political instability, climate change and policy change.There was significant variability and diversity in supply chain resilience applications, and, at the time of the review, there was no consensus on definitions, metrics and models for resilient supply chains. At the time of the review, the available literature focused on highly specific supply chain designs and niche markets and did not consider supply chains in the broader context of other networks. At the time of the review, the authors indicated that pandemics presented a unique threat to supply chains because they are unpredictable, impacts may be delayed, and disease spread may be limitless with waves continuing for some time; and they concluded that a comprehensive approach to network resilience quantification incorporating the supply chain in the context of other social and physical networks was necessary to address emerging challenges in the field.
