Urine and serum collection for molecular testing is recommended for the evaluation of patients for Zika virus (ZIKV) infection. Urine is a good alternative testing sample when blood collection is problematic.
It is difficult to diagnose ZIKV infection based on clinical signs and symptoms alone due to overlaps with other viruses, in addition infection is asymptomatic in most adult healthy patients. The review appeared to identify different diagnostic methods for ZIKV with an emphasis on non-invasive methods for sample collections. Systematic search methods were used but review methods were not described. Twelve (12) studies were identified (predominantly single case studies) of the use of urine samples for RT-PCR testing of ZIKV.
