What is this? In this systematic review, the authors searched for qualitative studies on post-traumatic growth (PTG) in people who have experienced earthquakes. They restricted their searches to articles published in English or Korean from January 2012 to January 2021. The authors included eight studies from countries in Asia and the Pacific.
What was found? The authors found that people who had experienced an earthquake modified their values. They categorised post-traumatic growth as changes in self-perception, interpersonal relationships, and religious beliefs that promoted growth in personal strength, relationships, gratitude for life, and spirituality.
Implications: The results of this study contribute to a positive psychological understanding of people who have experienced an earthquake. Post-traumatic growth analysis can provide data to develop psychological intervention programmes. More methods to evaluate and analyse PTG are needed.
Other considerations: The authors of the review did not discuss their findings in the context of issues relating to health equity.
