What is this? Climate-smart agriculture integrates the management of various agricultural issues, including cropland, livestock, forests and fisheries to address food security and climate change.

In this systematic review, the authors searched for studies of climate change and smallholder agriculture and integrated options for the agricultural sector. They restricted their searches to articles published in English between 2004 and 2016 and did the search up to September 2016. They included 113 studies.

What was found: Climate-smart agriculture has the ability to provide policy directions to promote climate change, health and nutritional benefits, finance and infrastructure development.

The authors identified various research and policy gaps in the social, policy, economic and management domains.

The included studies showed that it is uncertain whether gender, markets, landscape elements and decision making can promote coherence, coordination and integration of climate-smart agriculture.
