This review highlights the lack of literature on the use of social media in disease surveillance and outbreak management to support and improve public health, and to target specific populations to evaluate an intervention or interact with communities to improve health outcomes. However, reviewed articles clearly demonstrate that the integration of social media analytics into public health practice benefits disease surveillance, outbreak management, and target population outreach.
